Article Writing - A 5 Step Experiment

This is an experiment. Please read the complete article before trying this at home. I need to hear from you so that I can improve this mind program. Just go to my website and send me an email. Thanks.

I am a programmer with the idea that you can change and adapt your behavior.  For sometime I've wanted to develop a mind program that encourages writing. How you get that program to work for you requires you to train your mind. To write the program to your brain that says 'this is what I do when I want to write', you need to follow these steps. This is the program I run that makes me a writer.

I have always maintained that writing is all about focus. I also feel that most people want to write.  So what I am writing to you now is an experiment. The process will encourage anyone to find that inner place from which all writers write.

Focus requires that you see your goal clearly, that you picture yourself writing and enjoying writing. See yourself in a picture, imagine it clearly then step into the person you see in the picture and see your hand doing the writing.

Each of these steps  will take you to a certain level within your mind. Once you have the procedure set-up, you will have programmed yourself to be a writer.

Preliminary to starting this procedure, get rid of any ideas you may be entertaining about writers block, or I'm not able to write or I can't. Also get rid of the idea that you want to write for money or fame. If you approach writing with these in mind very soon you will sound as stilted as so many copywriters. You will just be writing to sell.

Think only about your goal. Leave no room in your mind for anything else. Clearly see yourself completing the words. This is the moment you are living. Anything else, past or future, is not in the picture.

You will need some equipment. A writing pad and a pen. I tend to favor stenographic pads with the spiral at the top. Or,use a simple editor like notepad, or use the editor that comes with your blog, if you have one.

You will need to be able to set a rhythm in your mind. Counting One-Thousand and One, One-Thousand and Two, One-Thousand and Three with emphasis on the One, Two, Three will exactly set the rhythm. Count for a few seconds then just feel the rhythm in you body.

You need to find the voice that speaks to you in your mind. I often find that voice when I am reading or when I am vacantly starring out at my wife's garden.

Once I get it going, I simply continue to listen to what it has to say. Listen carefully so that you actually hear it as though you were hearing it in your ears. What you will be writing is what you are hearing from your inner voice.

You can seed this voice with a specific idea. Do some research on a subject that you find particularly interesting. Then simply listen to the voice.

Write about something you love. Yes Sex is a good subject to write about. It depends on your audience.

If you have difficulty choosing a good subject then stop focusing on the good. Just write about the first subject that interests you.

Remember, you are trying to program yourself to be a writer. A writer is simply someone who writes. A writer is an explorer. A writer is discovering self by discovering what the inner voice is saying. Your inner mind is much more creative than you give it credit.

If you can speak, you are creative. Because we do not have any difficulty speaking we take it for granted. Being creative is the norm not the exception. We hear, we see, we feel, we interpret the world and we survive. All of these require highly creative thinking and action. Be grateful for your abilities to survive. This is what we have.

Find a spot where you will not be disturbed.  Now let us do an exercise that will stimulate the flow of words in our minds.

Here are the steps:

1. Do your rhythm count. Feel the beat in you body. Once you get the feeling stop counting. Music has a beat. So does the flow words. Let yourself relax with this inner beat.

2. Listen for the voice in you mind. Listen carefully. Focus on hearing it. It is there whenever you think. You can also create a picture in your mind. Really look at that image. Look at all the details. Feel the atmosphere. Look at whoever you see there. Look at all the colors and sounds. And, listen for the voice that is describing that picture to you.

3. As soon as you start to hear the voice, start to write what you hear. It is important that you focus on the action of listening. I call this purposeful thinking and purposeful action. If you focus on anything else you will become distracted from the purpose - writing.

4. Write until you feel the voice has told you everything. I often find that I can write an entire article in 30 to 45 minutes just by listening to this my inner speaking voice.

5. Leave the writing for a while. Go do something else totally different. This is the part I love.  I love the variety. I really enjoy having several things to do. It never gets boring because I do not know what will come next.

Continue to do this for many days. Don't forget to take a break occasionally. Family and friends are important. Run this program until you are no longer aware that you are running this program.  Typically it takes about two weeks. When you are on vacation is an ideal time. And keep listening to your voice.

As the title says, this is an experiment. With that in mind, I would love to hear from each of you about your thoughts on stimulating the writer in you. Please comment or go to my website and send me an email.

Any contact with me by email will be held in the strictest confidence.
