Finding Your Safe Place

No matter where you go, no matter what you think, no matter how you see the world, no matter what the doctor's say is wrong with you, you need a safe place where you are the person you want to be.

A place where you are confident, where you can easily tackle and handle any problem. This place must be portable, so you can take it fearlessly with you anywhere.

Can you imagine such a place?

Yes, you can! You just need to build it in your mind. And, whenever the pressure or the stress or the sadness or fear gets too great, you simply glide into that safe, confident place in your mind and return to full control while being here and now.

Let's work together now building that safe place.

There is a great advantage to be able to hear and see and touch things as though we are an actor in a movie. At other times I have  written about mind movies.

Like all great actors, you need to rehearse your part in a quiet place where you can close your eyes to the world and let yourself go quietly into the scenes that you are directing.

Close your eyes. Take three slow, deep breaths in letting each out as slowly.

Stretch every muscle in your body starting at your toes and going to the top of your head. Focus on each group of muscles as they move.

Now begin building your character what you want for yourself, all the characteristics to the you you want to become. Loving, happy, confident, outgoing, giving, forgiving, friendly, skillful, grateful.

Add whatever features you think are best for you. Imagine as many situations as you need to make your character the way you want to be.

As a director, you build the movie with all the features that you want, feeling the confidence, building your skills, showing yourself how you are able to become as you create new and inventive solutions to your problems.

This is a quiet space where peace reigns. You are alone, yet you can command all your strength to cope with what you see as your problems.

In this space, your problems are indistinct, shadows on the the edge of your vision. They are just there, not overwhelming, just slight inconveniences that never get to your safe, peaceful quiet zone.

You no longer need to fear them because with your confidence and skills and resources you know how to solve them.

And as you move deeper into your space, you see that all your problems are solved because you have found solutions for them.

Your safe place can have whatever you choose that brings you happiness  and peace. It can be a sunny day at the beach or a quiet evening reading a book at a cottage. Anywhere, where you feel secure and warm and protected and content.

And you looking back on the moment before you started your mind movie and traveled to your safe space, you realize that all the pressure and stress and worry that went before was for nothing.

There is no need for stress, or fear, or worry in your safe place. You can look at anything that is required of you with confidence that you can change and adapt to any situation and from that position solve your problems.

So having traveled this far into your safe space, you relax and just put away all the tensions in your body.

This is your mind and your private space. This is where you can be the person you want to be.  This is where you create yourself and the world around your.

This is where you define what you expect of yourself.  Where you learn to accept the world as it is. Where you learn to accept those things you can not change. And, you can do all this just by taking the time to relax and direct your movie.

You are just human with a normal, human part to play.

Rehearse this space often, make your mind movie a daily exercise for two or three weeks, so that when you want to reset yourself for a particular situation you only need to imagine yourself in your safe place.

While you are at it, why not write all these things down. You can even add dialog and make a plot or describe your quiet space.

In order to think and write about your new mind movie, you must go there.

As you write and think about your space you begin to realize that you are experiencing that quieter, happier, more peaceful, confident and successful you.

Then, whenever you want to add another chapter to your safe place you can just write a new scene for yourself.

We are alone in the presence of other beings. We project our mind world onto the world around us.

So why not make our mental world, in which we are the director and main actor, our safe place.

The only fear we need to concern ourselves with then, is one that threatens our life. Any other fears we can eliminate by solving it in our safe space.

We can make confidence in our abilities to cope, a characteristic of who we are. We can be the person we want to be.

So build your safe place in your imagination.

It is your mind.
