Words of A Depressed Child
I'm feeling depressed. What do I do?
I feel like life isn't worthwhile. I'm only 13.
My parents are getting divorced. My entire life is falling apart.
My mom gets angry easily.
My dad always complains about my mom when he's with us.
I cut myself and that helps but I still feel scared about the future of things afterwards.
I want it to stop. Recently I've had thoughts of suicide. I think it would be great for it to be over.
I want to hurt my parents like they hurt us. I want them to feel what I feel and know what it's like.
I don't know what to do anymore!
Deep down I still know I want to live. I want to have a career and kids.
But it doesn't seem worth the hassle.
Answer: Before you do anything else you need to talk to your family doctor about your thoughts of suicide and cutting.
You need to do this right away. So get your mother to make an appointment with your family doctor. His job is to help you.
When we are in pain we want so much for it to be over. Death sounds like a good option until you realize you won't be here to enjoy when all the pain goes away.
Yes, your mother may be upset about her problems, but you need to keep talking to her. How else will she know what you are thinking and feeling?
Show her what you wrote here. That will make it very real for her.
Also you may want to think about what you are telling yourself. Your parents divorce is not about you. Their problems are for them to resolve.
Your life is here and now. Keep on planning for the future. Keep on dreaming of the day when you will be old enough to be independent.
Tell your mom to ask your father to keep you out of their problems. At thirteen you are old enough to let them know when what they are doing is not helpful.
Tell your mom and dad that you love them both but they need to start acting like adults. They need to solve their problems together without treating their children like pawns in a game.
Conclusion
Is this your child, caught up in a divorce?
Divorce is the absolute last option because for children it is the total destruction of their family. We must read every book, see every therapist, talk to every doctor just to make sure that we do not disturb their minds.
Our children come first and foremost even if it means putting our own feelings on hold.
In looking the comments, which have been somewhat edited to improve readability, it is easy to see what they are feeling and how they are talking to themselves. What they write is what is going on in their minds.
They are asking for help. You, as parents, have an obligation to listening carefully.
When it comes to relationship issues between parents, we have the obligation to do everything in our power to save our relationship and ensure the physical and emotional safety of our children.
What we say in front of our children they often do not understand. How can they? They do not have our experience. They are still dependent. They identify with our persons.
